ON BACKGROUND

2 Bars + 3 Stars takes its name from the official flag of the District of Columbia (below), my current domicile, which is a mere “federal district” and not quite a state or a city. (We have a mayor but not full congressional representation.) Right from the start, I was drawn to the aesthetic of the flag. Simple and bold. Red and white and geometric shapes that even a two y.o. can recognize. A near perfect riposte to those 50 states that we may never measure up to. Anyhow, I don’t mean for 2B+3S to be political — at least not overly so. We’ll see what it is, eventually. For now, it’s just a medium for my occasional public thought, etc.

M, S, and P are my initials. By using them instead of my whole name I’m not seeking anonymity; rather, I’m aiming to avoid unwanted pseudo-celebrity, or whatever you call it when one’s presence on these internets exceeds his threshold for embarrassment (obviously, mine is relatively low).

By way of background, I was born two weeks shy of the exact midpoint of the 1970s, 10 or so months after Nixon’s resignation. I’ve called D.C. home, more or less, since August 1999, when I moved here from Seattle to start law school and life. By day, I work as an attorney for the federal government. An obscure agency that most people — even other government lawyers — have never heard of. But it pays the bills and I genuinely tolerate well the job that I’m asked to do, which is, generally speaking, trying to prevent capitalists from stealing too much of the working class’s money. (It’s this bourgeoisie-vs-proletariat aspect of the job that I love, even if I hate having become a bureaucrat.)

That’s about it for now. I can draw a more distinct picture. But by providing too much detail at the beginning I would risk typing myself into a corner.

(If you’re dying to know more, feel free to drop me a line.)
